Who We Are?

Two decades in the business of producing actionable insights and enabling change makers to create positive impacts in society

Founded in the year 2000, the National Institute for African Studies (NIAS) is a non-profit think tank that advocates public policy initiatives and education schemes, filling a gap in the global policy space by publicising voices from around the world. The Institute has grown into a research organisation with offices across the United Kingdom.

NIAS produces a wide range of high quality and impact outputs, including our flagship open-access journal, The Saharan,  that explores the dynamics between culture and development in Africa.

We are studying the impact of rapid technological advancement on Development in the Global South, with a particular focus on AI.

Development is a multi-dimensional process focused on changing structures, attitudes and institutions to accelerate economic growth, reduce inequality and eradicate absolute poverty.

Based on research and emerging geopolitical developments, our board selects three African countries for the focus of our studies and publications each year.

In year 2025 we will focus on the issues around application of new technologies, especially AI, to resolving critical development challenges in Sudan, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and within the African diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.

Subscribe to our research and events mailing list to be kept up to date of our activities in 2025.
